Gynecomastia – Definition, Signs, Classification

Gynecomastia refers to the development of breasts in men. The word Gynecomastia has a Greek origin that means “women-like breasts”. A torment for many males, it affects 40 to 65 percent of adolescent males and approximately 10 to 15 percent of adult men.

Gynecomastia only recently truly came out into the open and in fact Gynecomastia surgery is in the top five of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed on men.

What Is Gynecomastia?

It may be caused, by an increase in “adipose” (fatty) tissues, but may also be the hypertrophy or overgrowth of the glandular breast tissue, as well.

In these cases a plastic surgeon can treat this type of gynecomastia by making small incisions to remove the glandular tissue.

SmartLipo Ultra is performed in our facility under local anesthesia. You will remain awake and alert during the entire procedure. Using gentle suction, excess fat is melted with a laser so that it may be removed using a cannula, or straw like instrument. The procedure lasts for about an hour, and patients walk out of the office with their new, sculpted physiques. Recovery time is rapid and there is less post-op bruising and pain compared to old fashioned liposuction.

Male breast reduction procedure leaves only one or two very small puncture sites on each side of the chest, each only about 2mm wide. Scarring does not typically occur, however, any resulting scars will normally fade into the natural color of the skin.

Male breast reduction is generally recommended for patients with full or fatty chests without hard glandular tissue. If you are very thin but have an appearance of male breasts you may not be a candidate as this may indicate that you may have excess glandular tissue, or “true” gynecomastia, and therefore will not benefit from SmartLipo. If this is the case you may need a surgical procedure to directed remove the glandular tissue. This procedure is called a Direct Excision. A physical examination will determine if the breast contains excess glandular tissue.
